Rising Costs and Economic Struggles: A Growing Crisis
If you are really struggling with the high cost of living, know that you are not alone. In recent months, many people have shared with me their feelings of financial desperation. Have you ever experienced a palpable sense of panic when comparing your rising bills to your current income? Many people are stressed out because it has become such a struggle to pay the bills each month.
The Staggering Increase in Living Costs
As I discussed a few days ago, a typical U.S. household must now spend $1,069 more per month to buy the same goods and services as three years ago. Over a year, that amounts to nearly an extra $13,000. Month after month, prices keep climbing, yet those in power insist everything is fine.
Viral Video Highlights Soaring Grocery Prices
Last week, a TikTok video about rising grocery prices at Walmart quickly garnered over a million views. The creator compared a grocery order he placed two years ago, which cost $126.67, to what the same order would cost today. To his shock, it would now cost $414.39.
Many of the items I regularly buy have doubled or more than doubled in price, but in this case, the total cost of the order more than tripled. The TikToker explained that the original $126.16 purchase was for a month’s worth of groceries, including 53 items. The updated total was $414.39, almost quadrupling. “I feel like I’m going to be sick,” he said.
Walmart’s Response and Public Reaction
When asked about this, Walmart responded that the price differences were due to discontinued items, not actual inflation. However, this explanation did not satisfy everyone. Another person tried the “Reorder All” button on an old order, and the cost went from $180 to $430.
Viewers expressed shock and frustration, with comments like “Now I feel a little less gaslit about grocery prices because it has gone crazy, and it’s not just me!” and “Walmart, can you explain yourself, please?” A shopper mentioned spending $180 for two weeks of groceries, now spending over $430 for the same amount.
